Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; it’s part of the lifestyle God wants us to live on a daily basis. Take a look at these verses:

…He ordered my goings and he hath put a new song in my mouth even a thanksgiving unto our God. –Psalm 40:2-3, 1928 Book of Common Prayer

Through Him, therefore, let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name. –Hebrews 13:15, Amplified

But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ. –1 Corinthians 15:57, Amplified

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. –1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV

Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord, at all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. –Ephesians 5:19–20, Amplified

God wants us to have a new song of thanksgiving for every occasion—and today is a new occasion!

It must please our Father so much when we offer a new song to Him. He must love watching His children move from drudging through life with an unthankful heart to living constantly on the watch for all the good He brings into our lives. He wants us thankful all through the day, every day, right to the very end. We are meant to live in a continual state of thanksgiving.

Think of it this way: thankfulness is like a flower. It needs constant attention, care, and cherishing if it is going to live and grow. When left unattended, the flower of thanksgiving can be affected harshly by the withering winds of life, particularly so compared to some of the other qualities that may come more naturally to us.

The best way to cause thanksgiving to grow in our hearts is to be really careful to never let our hearts be unthankful. That includes not only our thanks for God, but also our thanks for other people. Has anyone done anything to help you today where you didn’t say anything about it? We should thank other people who give lovingly to us in some way, thought, or deed.

I often think what it must be like to our kind Father in heaven when we don’t notice the little things that He does to give us pleasure. Perhaps we should begin by thinking more of even what other people do for us out of love toward us and for Him.

So today, cherish thankfulness. Let it blossom into a beautiful flower that always brings praise to our glorious God.
