Stop Being Stuck in the Mud

Stop Being Stuck in the Mud

One of my favorite praying people in the whole world was an elderly Pentecostal lady named Mamma Lena Cain. Before she went home to be with the Lord at 96 years of age, I asked her what the difference was between pray-ers in this generation and pray-ers in her generation. She said, “Well, we had the victory before we ever prayed, so we never prayed long.”

Pray-ers in her generation spent time in the Word. They spent time meditating on and talking about the promises and power of God. When they made their petition to God, they were already rejoicing. They knew the answer was theirs. They were laughing, shouting, and running when they came to the prayer room because they were already seeing and saying the outcome, which was good!

Most people these days don’t do that. In fact, they do the exact opposite.

Instead of rehearsing God’s Word and meditating on it, they rehearse their problems over and over. They meditate on their problems, and then come to God and say, “Oh, Lord, things are bad. They’re dark. It’s so awful. Everything’s going wrong. Woe is me.”

When you pray like this, you’re like a car stuck in the mud that only spins its wheels when someone hits the gas pedal. The more you pray, the deeper in trouble you get. You spin round and round in the problem, going deeper and deeper.

If you find yourself in this situation, you need to do what we did as teenagers. We once loaded so many kids in the back of our car at the drive-in theatre that we bogged the car down in the mud. We all jumped out to lighten the load, then we gave the back of that car a big shove and got it out of the mud onto dry ground.

Lighten your load by obeying the admonition in 1 Peter 5:6–7.

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Instead of focusing on the problem, go to the Lord and say, “Father, I humble myself before You and admit that as big as my problems might seem to me, they are small compared to Your goodness and Your power. I give them to You right now. I put them in Your hands and will not worry about them anymore. I trust that You are taking care of them because You care for me. I know that in due time, I’m going to come out on top of this thing.”

Once you’ve prayed this, give your faith a shove by speaking the Word of God. Get yourself out of the mud of discouragement and onto the dry ground of faith by declaring the outcome in the midst of adversity. Get so happy about that outcome that you can’t help but shout and dance and roll right on to victory!
